In a recent TikTok post that has taken social media by storm, Anne Hathaway shared an unconventional trick to achieve fuller-looking lips. While on set, the beloved actress demonstrated how she uses a simple hair pin to create a temporary plumping effect to her upper lip, leaving fans intrigued and curious.
To get a fuller-looking, less “wilted” upper lip, Hathaway asked her hairstylist Adir Abergel for a hairpin and got to work. “I went in and I sort of stimulated my lip to try to get some blood flow back there, to get some circulation,” she shared. “It’s just a little something to wake your upper lip up.”
However, she did caution viewers from over-doing it. “Safety disclaimer: You can overdo this. Don’t push too hard. It’s meant to be a gentle, gentle thing that you don’t do for longer than 30 seconds,” she shared.
While Hathaway’s lips did appear noticeably fuller, many followers were left wondering about the safety and long-term effects of this technique. To provide some clarity, we turned to West Palm Beach, FL board-certified dermatologist Kenneth Beer, MD. “Any small injury will cause the lip to swell,” he says. “So, if you use a hair pin to injure the lips, you will get a response that enlarges the lips. It is of course a temporary change unless you scar the area, in which case it is permanent. Overall, probably not a bright idea.”
As with any beauty trend, it’s crucial to prioritize safety and consider the potential consequences. While Anne Hathaway’s lip hack may offer a quick fix, the underlying risks (if overdone) highlight the importance of being cautious with DIY beauty techniques.
