The Queen of Latin Music, Shakira just won the VMA’s Vanguard Award, an achievement shared by iconic artists like Janet Jackson and Missy Elliot. This has been the Colombian superstar’s year, bouncing back from split with Gerard Piqué to topping the charts with breakup anthems and up for the VMA Artist of the Year. To cap it all off? A career-spanning 10-minute long VMAs performance, of course.
In honor of her iconic achievement, we rounded up Shakira’s top 5 best looks and take a glimpse at her style evolution through the years.
2005 VMA’s Performance
It feels right to start with this genre-breaking night, when Shakira performed hit single “La Tortura,” the first song performed entirely in Spanish at the show. Encapsulating everything the artist was known for at the time, right down to the belly dancer belt, this is all wild, free waves and that danceable, sexy style she made iconic.
2011 Latin Grammy Awards
By this point in her chart-topping career, Shakira had developed a glamorous sense of style that she paired with reserved makeup looks. And this night was no different. Stunning in a crystal-lined corset and flowing pastel pink skirts, the Colombian star kept her makeup light and rosy.
Back in 2014, she told InStyle that the secret to her makeup looks was minimalism. “Keep it simple,” Shakira advises. “I usually wear a natural color on my lips and accent my eyes. I feel like the less makeup I use, the better I look. After so many years in front of the camera, sometimes, I think I look better now than 10 years ago when I wore so much! It’s important to let your own skin shine through.”
75th Annual Cannes Film Festival
Jumping forward to just last year, Shakira absolutely blew us away at the premier of ‘Elvis’ at the 2022 Canne Film Festival proving she is the master of old Hollywood glamor. A gorgeous black gown with a sexy thigh-high split paired with elbow-length black mesh gloves screamed absolute elegance. Keeping her makeup in her signature minimalist style, Shakira nails the quiet luxury trend in the way only she can.
“What an extraordinary movie of one of my favourite artists of all time,” the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer wrote in an Instagram post at the time.
Viktor & Rolf’s Fall/Winter 2023-24 Haute Couture Show
How could anyone forget the day Shakira made the word ‘yes’ overrated. This iconic all white look rocked us to the core, as the superstar said what we were all thinking in a show-stopping graphic ‘NO’ coat she wore front row to Viktor & Rolf’s Fall/Winter 2023–24 Haute Couture show.
The oversized, embellished jacket was complemented by a soft, rosy makeup look and a sleek, long hairstyle that managed to say quiet luxury despite the loud message she conveyed.
2023 VMA’s Red Carpet
Honestly, we would be remiss not to include this gorgeous golden goddess look Shakira stunned with on the red carpet this year. Complete her signature paired-back makeup look and mermaid hair wet waves, the superstar absolutely blew this one away.
Artists on the carpet were quick to share their love for the icon, including Anitta, who is up against Shakira for the Best Latin award. “I think Shakira for us was a big, big influence … to make us believe that it’s possible being a Latina and getting here and showing our culture and everything,” Anitta said during the pre-show.
