Makeup artist for the FX’s The Bear, Ignacia Soto-Aguilar is no stranger to the need to both hide and apply tattoos. And these days, she’s got the speed to back up the technique.

From Tattooed to….More Tattooed?

In the real world, Jeremy Allen White’s tattoos tell his life story. His six pieces include references to his children, his now ex-wife and his friends, though many remain a mystery to fans.

When asked what his triangle tattoo means in an interview with Fox, White said, “I appreciate your question, but it’s a really lame answer I have for this. The triangle tattoo was for a couple of friends. I got it when I was really young. I was like 17, and it was done very poorly, so it’s very raised.”

Sharing the process of hiding his tattoos in timelapse on Instagram, Soto-Aguilar clearly has the whole process down to a science.

From body prep to painting Allen White’s tattoos over with the Skin Illustrator On Set Flesh Tone palette ($97), Soto-Aguilar creates a brand new canvas for the next stage. Applying 11 tattoos and five scars using transfer techniques, Carmy comes to life in just 24 minutes.

According to Soto-Aguilar, that’s down from an hour and 26 minutes back in season one. She speeds up the process by utilizing a hair dryer to cut down on setting time and applying multiple tattoo transfers at the same time.

Creating Carmy’s Look for “The Bear”

Carmy’s tattoos aren’t just incidental art—just like Jeremy Allen White’s tattoos, they tell his story. Created by Jeremy Allen White’s own tattoo artist and longtime friend, Ben Shields, the designs were inspired directly by the script.

“I designed a lot, and then we whittled it down,” Shields tells PopSugar. “In the beginning, I sent maybe 75 different things. Jeremy really knew in the end which ones he liked and what he wanted to do, so I think we got it down to 10 that he actually used.”

The final designs include a spilled whiskey glass, a hand with a chef’s knife through it and 773 (Carmy’s area code).
