No matter what mood you’re in, essential oils have you covered. Ahead, expert-recommended blends and products to incorporate into your aromatic collection.
If You’re Sad
If you’re feeling disinterested, discouraged or just plain down, holistic healer Hope Gillerman says to make a diffuser cocktail of three focusing oils: rosemary, eucalyptus and cedarwood. “Slowly breathe in the vapor from your diffuser to help you get more oxygen to your brain and wake up to new possibilities! Or, try a bright and shiny peppermint cocktail like my H. Gillerman Organics Clear Mind Tension Remedy ($50) to get you up and moving.”
Lindsey Carter, founder of Blooming Light and master aromatherapist, likes to combine geranium and sweet orange essential oils to help promote feelings of joy and happiness. “Geranium’s floral aroma is rich in monoterpenols that help provide a sense of security to support opening your heart,” she says. “When partnered with the emotionally uplifting and tension-calming sweet orange essential oil, you can’t help but feel an overflow of happiness.”
If You’re Restless
VP of brand innovation at Alo Yoga, Alyson Wilson reaches for one of Alo’s new essential oil cocktails when she can’t sleep: Sleep & Downshift Essential Oil Blend ($18), a blend she says puts the heart and mind at ease thanks to Roman chamomile, neroli and ylang ylang. Breathing in this intoxicating mixture of fresh herbal notes with a sweet neroli and petite grain helps to release any tension and will help you unwind.”
If You’re Anxious
“Calm an anxious mood by mixing the true comfort of bergamot with a drop of rose,” says Gillerman. “Deeply inhale this mist from your diffuser to shift your mind from worry to self compassion.” If you’re looking for a pre-mixed blend, she recommends Vitruvi Moonbeam Diffuser Blend ($26).
Carter says lavender and bergamot are great for when you’re feeling anxious, nervous or scared. “While they are both known for their calming and sedating properties, combining the soothing aroma of lavender with the uplifting citrus aroma of bergamot soothes nervous emotions.”
If You’re Overwhelmed
“Rosemary is a great essential oil to help promote clarity while energizing and uplifting your mood thanks to its high amount of 1,8-cineole chemical components,” says Carter. “When you pair it with the mind-calming, emotionally uplifting and linalyl acetate–rich essential oil of clary sage, you have a powerful combination to help you when you are feeling overwhelmed, scattered or unfocused.” The perfect product for when you’re feeling like you just can’t get organized: Blooming Light Clarity Essential Oil Blend ($17).
If You’re Unaroused
If you’re not feeling it in the bedroom, Gillerman recommends running your diffuser with a few drops of Plant Therapy Organic Lavender Essential Oil ($9), a drop of black pepper for some heat and one drop of ylang ylang or jasmine for sexiness. “Saje Goddess Diffuser Oil ($26) adds neroli to the mix for a euphoric cocktail,” she says.
If You’re Tired
To feel that post-spa day clarity and rejuvenation, Wilson suggests Alo Breathe & Spa Essential Oil Blend ($18). “This heart-opening oil blends layers of ravintsara with eucalyptus and tea tree oil to encourage deep, healing breaths while fresh peppermint and laurel leaf energizes and inspires.”
