Whether you’re a beauty lover or not, you’ve inevitably heard of pimple patches by now, and you’ve definitely seen Starface patches. If you take time to think about it, you’ve probably seen someone on the subway or in a coffee shop with a little star-shaped sticker on their face. If you’re anything like me, you’ve looked at those gold stars and thought, “Cute! but does it do anything?”
And that’s what I set to find out when I decided to test out Starface’s two most popular pimple patch variations—their Hydro-Stars Big Yellow ($15) and Hydro-Stars Big Blue ($17). I recently finished six months on Accutane, so I’m lucky enough to not be dealing with major breakouts anymore, but as my skin has adjusted to life off Isotretinoin, I have experienced some clogged pores and small pimples around my jawline, so I figured now was a great time to try out these viral, adorable pimple patches.
Starface Pimple Patches: An Honest Review
I’ll be frank—going into this experience, I was under the impression that people were mostly using these patches because they were cute and fashionable more than they were effective, so my hopes were low. In addition to that, I’ve never had great experiences with traditional pimple patches in the past, so it’s safe to say I wasn’t expecting much. But, after a few uses, I was pleasantly surprised.
I started my testing with the OG Big Yellow patches, which are the brand’s classic hydrocolloid patches. I wore the stars on my face overnight on some pimples on my cheeks, and when I removed them the next day, they definitely appeared less red, but weren’t gone completely. The next night, I switched to the Big Blue patches which feature hydrocolloid and salicylic acid, and definitely had more luck with those. The inclusion of salicylic acid definitely provided that extra “oomph” I needed to really shrink my spots.
Overall, I was pretty happy with my Starface experience. The size and redness of my spots definitely decreased, though they didn’t disappear completely, but I’ve personally never found a pimple patch that gets rid of breakouts entirely. Plus, the fact that the patches are so cute makes them wearable outside of the house, which is useful for preventing picking and prodding at spots with dirty hands on the go.
